The Gift of Belize: Exploring Belize for the First Time

A year ago today if you asked me if I knew where Belize was, I would have uneasily said “yes, it’s somewhere in Central America. Right?” Then I would have likely pulled out my smart phone, typed in “Belize,” and then found out that it boarders Mexico. Basically, a year ago I knew almost nothing about Belize. Since then I have had countless people recommend that I visit Belize as they rant on about the variety and magnitude of the natural beauty that can be found there. I’ve been told Belize has Mayan ruins, caves with Mayan ruins, shark alley (a place where you can swim with sharks), allegedly the world’s second largest reef, and much more. After being told to visit Belize from people who give pretty solid travel advice, adding Belize to my list of countries to visit seemed like a no brainer. However, I really had no target time frame on when I would make a visit, I just knew I would make it there sometime in the next two to three years.

Fast forward to just a few weeks ago and you find me being completely surprised by my wonderful girlfriend who presented me with plane tickets to Belize for a birthday trip that will last nine whole days. Out of all the gifts I have ever been given ahead of my birthday, this may be the one I am most excited about. Also, if venturing to Belize wasn’t exciting enough for me, my brother, who I rarely get to see, will be meet up with us while we are there.
As you may have already guessed, this will be all three of ours first visit to Belize and we want to make the most of our nine days by experiencing as much of Belize as we can. At the same time, we don’t want to arrive in Belize with so many activities planned that we don’t have time to truly take in the experience. So we have only loosely planned the trip. Our only solid plans thus far have been our various lodging accommodations in two different cities in Belize. Don’t get me wrong, we will be prepared for any impromptu hiking, spelunking, scuba diving, sky diving, or snorkel opportunity that come our way, day or night. We are just not placing anything firmly in our itinerary. The trip will truly be a day-by-day adventure with general ideas of what there is to do.

That being said, here is a list of the top three Belize attractions that have caught my attention. I hope that during the trip we have the opportunity to experience each of them.
